Medicare Health Plan Options
Seniors aged 65+ or approaching age 65 have many health insurance
options available to them, significantly more than was available to
seniors a generation earlier.
- When you turn age 65, you are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A. Medicare Part A covers; 1) hospital care 2) home health care and 3) hospice. Medicare Part A is at no cost to you.
- Medicare Part B is automatic as well. It covers Doctor's visits and lab tests etc.. Although Medicare Part B is automatic, it isn't free. There is a monthly premium that you are required to pay.
- Other Medicare Health Plan options that either supplement or replace Medicare include Medicare Supplement Plans, Medicare Advantage Plans, and Prescription Drug Plans (also known as Medicare Part D).
Important Information You should Know
- Some Medicare Health Plans have specific. enrollment dates during which time you can enroll or change plans.
- If you have medical conditions and are interested in enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan, you should do so within 6mo. of turning age 65, or enrolling in Medicare Part B. During this time period you cannot be declined due to medical conditions.
- In general, make sure the plan you plan to enroll in fits your specific needs. The cheapest plan is not always the best for you. You'll want to make sure that prescriptions that you currently take are covered, and that your doctor(s) are in the network for example.
